1. Danube bank in Budapest, Castle District and Andrassy Avenue

Budapest is a very popular city. This is the 25th most popular tourist target in the world. The city is located in the beautiful Danube bend where the 2850 km long river turns from the west-east direction at the North-South direction. The Danube is bordered by the forest-covered hills in this region.

2. Lake Balaton

Lake Balaton is 595 km2 shallow lake in Southwest Hungary, and the biggest Lake in central Europe. The average depth of the lake is 3m. It’s the the most popular summer holiday target in Hungary. The biggest cities are Siofok, Balatonfured and Keszthely. The main season is in July – August, where it is ideal to be in the water. There are many beaches at both shores. The area next to the Lake is mostly covered with weekend houses.

3. Hot water Lake Heviz

The natural thermal lake in Heviz is one of the most popular touristic target in Hungary. The area of the lake is 4.44 ha and the total amount of water is changing every 4 days. Heviz is very close to the Northwestern shore of Lake Balaton.

4. Hortobagy plains National Park

The Hortobagy plains is the first national park in Hungary. It was established in 1973. It is a Unesco World Heritage Site as well. You can find peace and silence at the 80,000 hectares here. At first, you think there’s nothing here. Apart from the small village also known Hortobagy, and the river is also called Hortobagy with the famous nine hole bridge not many things distract your vision.

8. Széchenyi Spa, Budapest

There are 21 pools there (3 external and 18 internal temperature with different water) with lots of saunas, infra, steam cabins as well. Construction began in 1909 in a classic and neo-renaissance style. The thermal water from the well, more than 1 km deep, provide the heating for the zoo and water for two other baths in Budapest as well.

10. Pannonhalma monastery

The Monastery on the small hill has incredible cultural, artistic and historical values. Apart from the Monastery, a botanical garden, a winery also can be found here. The area has exceptional natural values as well. There is a fishing lake at the bottom of the monastery as well.

11. Eger

The Eger Castle / Stronghold has a huge part in the Turkish invasion, when a small defender team was victorious over the huge Turkish army. Eger is also famous about wine-making as well. The Szepasszony valley is a part of the city, where you can check the wines of different winemakers. Perhaps the most famous wine is the Eger bulls blood, which is a red wine. There is a newly built spa here as well.

12. Holloko village

It is the only Unesco World Heritage site of this kind. The main event is the Easter here, where the boys use huge jars of waters to pour them on the girls in the morning.

13. Lake Tisza

The area has a fantastic wildlife, often watched on boats. There is Europe’s biggest freswater aquarium is also can be found here, which shows the flora and fauna of the neighborhood.

14. Lillafüred

15. Sopron

17. Archery

According to our knowledge in history, the ancestors of Hungary arrive to the Land in 896 AD. and they used their arches during horse riding. Today also there is a man here who can shoot an arch for more than 600mm distance, keeping the World record in this genre. There are several places in the country where it is possible to practice this sport.

18. Visegrad Castle

visegradVisegrad is one of the finest place here in Hungary. It is located in the Danube bend North from Budapest, the distance is approximately 45 km from Budapest. The main attraction is the Upper Castle here, which is referred by the name as well. Here was the Castle of many Kings, Governors here. The view from the 333m upper Castle to the Danube is spectacular. There is a lower Castle here as well. Lots of Italian artists worked here in the Royal Palace. There are also beautiful forests, and a summer toboggan can be found here.

19. Esztergom Cathedral

(118x49m) The Dead of foundation was issued in 1001. Esztergom is located in the Danube bend area in beautiful natural surrounding. Esztergom is popular among tourists, nice restaurants can be found in the city. Esztergom is approximately 60 km from Budapest.

20. Tata ” Old ” lake

The famous Old Lake is a camp place for top Hungarian sportsmen before main World championships, and in Autumn thousands of Geese migrate here. Even there is a dedicated event for the Geese stay in Tata. In this time they lowered the Lake to avoid disturbing the birds. It is very enjoyable to walking around the Lake and check the nearby Castle, and enjoy the nature in the city. There are nice restaurants also waiting for his visitors here near the Old Lake. This is not the only Lake of this area there several others as well.

21. Palvolgyi cave, Budapest

The temperature is about 12 Celsius, so a warm clothes is needed even in summer, a good shoes also very useful. The visitable area is paved with concrete stairs and lighted.

22. Gemenc Forest

23. Szigetvar

In 1566 approximately 100,000 Turkish soldier wants to attack the fortress, and the 2000 people defender team succeeded to keep in 34 days, after they riding out on horses, but all of them died. Apart from the huge fortress, a Mosque, and a newly built thermal spa also can be found here.

24. Bakony hills

25. Szarvas botanical garden

Many kinds of plants, trees and flowers can be seen here, and peacocks wander around in the garden. At the end of the arboretum the River Körös Backwater can be seen. In Szarvas there is a spa as well, and great restaurants.

26. Lake Velence

27. Boldogko Castle

28. Orfu

The average depth of the water is between 3 and 3.5m. The Lake is a popular tourist destination. The other lakes in the lake system, is the Lake Pécsi (famous for the large catfishes caught in the lake), Herman Otto Lake and Lake Kováccsszénájai.

29. Badacsony wine growing area

The Badacsony is located at the North shore of Lake Balaton. There are several wine cellars can be found here, and in Badacsonyors a Botanical garden as well. The name of the vulcanic hill is Badacsony, there are several such hills in the North shore, Badacsony is the most known which is 437m high. At the two sides of the hill the areas convenient for wine growing. The Szurkebarat (Grey monk or Grey friend) is a special local wine, which is comes from the Pinot noir, which was brought here from France. From Fonyod ferry goes to Badacsony.

30. Dance “houses”

The Dance houses are very popular in Hungary. Apart from the traditional Hungarian folk dance, Irish, Greek, Scottish and Moldavian dance houses are also popular. In these places the teach as well, from the absolute beginner level, so it is not a problem to go there without extensive dance skills.

31. Szentendre

The Picturesque little town can be found near to Budapest. It is called the Town of Painters as well. Formerly it was a wine growing area today it is more of a touristic target and residential area. One of the advantages that it can be accessed by the Budapest suburban railway (HEV) as well, for example from the Batthyanyi square. There is a village museum here (Skanzen) and many other museums and picture galleries as well. There are nice narrow streets, fair, a small spring, little forest with a playground, Danube bank, cozy restaurants as well, with tasty food.

32. Szemlohegyi cave, Budapest

The Szemlőhegyi cave located in Pusztaszeri út 35 in Budapest. It can be accessed from Arpád bridge with the bus no 29. Above the cave a geological path shows the main minerals of Budapest, with the ways of their practical usage as well. It is possible to practice hiking in the lift opening, and there is a playground as well, screen, and touch screen knowledge base as well.

33. Ilona waterfall, Matra hills

The Ilona waterfall is in the Matra hills, the highest hills in the area of Hungary. To go there a little excursion needed, not 10 minutes more of 1-2 hours for example from Paradfurdo. In the Matra hills many springs can be found, apart from the two well known peaks of Kekesteto and Galyateto.

34. Zirc botanical garden

Zirc is often referred as the capital of Bakony hills. The Bakony hills is a huge green area North from Lake Balaton. The botanical garden is a pleasant place with many interesting plants. The famous Cuha spring (which goes in the Bakony hills in a beautiful valley, can be visited with a small railway) is apppear here as well supplying a smaller lake. Among the many plants and trees several unique species can be found here for example a row of 40m high lime-trees, a 400m old Oak tree, or the Amur Cork Wood tree. The area of the English style garden arboretum is 18 Hectares, which gives home an abundant bird population as well.

35. Ordogmalom waterfall, Visegrad hills

The 25m high Ördögmalom waterfall is located at the Malomkerti valley 2.5km distance from Visegrád. From Visegrad a red tourist sign leads here, or it can be accessed from the asphalt road leads from Visegrad to Pilisszentlaszlo. Nice forests and lakes also can be found there-

36. Tihany

Tihany boasting with lots of tourist highlights. Apart form the 1000 year old monastery, wine growing areas, two lakes, monk houses graved in the rock, beautiful forests, and the Lake Balaton waits for the visitors. One of the smallest and most picturesque beach of Lake Balaton also can be found here (Sajkod beach). There is a Cyprian spring, lavender field, geyser field, but the legendary echo cannot be heared anymore. It is worth to check the area as well, the huge trees and the sight of the Lake Balaton can help to forget the difficulties of the past and future, at least for a while.

37. Tisza “flowers”

Tisza flowers or Mayflowers only appear in Europe in Hungary as far as I know in River Tisza, but in 2012 they also appeared in River Danube as well. The larvae of the Mayflower lives in 3 long years in a Mud, while for several hours flies out and mating. The interesting mating ritual only can be seen for a day at the same place. The event usually starts at South on river Tisza and goes Northwise, usually in the Middle of June, but the exact date is changing year by year.

38. ” Buso walking ” in Mohacs

The buso walking in Hungary is a usual event. The Sokac people dressed in scary masks chase the winter or the Turkish people from Hungary. According to certain sources the Turkish but according to other sources Sokac (Croatian) people came to Hungary after the Turkish people left. Sometimes “foreign Sokac” people also appearing from the neighboring countries (Serbie and Croatia) and Poland as well.

39. Bük vagy Bükfürdő

Bukfurdo is one of the most popular spa in Hungary. 5200m2 water surface, 32 pools, modern saunas, sports fields, leisure areas. The neighborhood is also beautiful. Kőszeg, Sárvár, Szombathely. Sopron and the Lake Ferto is also not far from here.

40. Gundel pancake

The Gundel pancake made from walnut and dark chocolate and rum is a true Hungarian specialty. Worth trying at least once. The nuts are not to be finely minced. Need to add more butter, milk, sugar, cream, raisins and candied orange peel. Allegedly, no need to ignite according to the original recipe. It is only dark chocolate recommended for the preparation of the pancake.

41. Zalakaros

The 96 degrees Celsius water comes from 2000 meters depth is one of the best healing waters. The alkaline water contains hydrogen, iodine, bromine, sulfur, fluorine compounds / ions. There are an another spring with 53 degrees Celsius thermal water as well.

42. Pick salami

Pick salami needs no introduction, but rather just eat it. In the past, the salami was made only in winter. Flesh and bacon of bigger sized pigs are used to make it, which is smoked with beech trees, secret spice mix are added, then during mold the salami is formed. The mold extracts the sugars and phosphates from the salami, at the same time also makes it micro-biologically stable. Only the salami master knows the secret recipe. In the past, water used for cooling, now there are more advanced cooling technologies are also available.

43. Egerszalók salt hill

Egerszalók is famous about the salt hill and the thermal spa next to it. The relatively new spa hotel is also very popular among foreign and local tourists as well. In Egerszalók pleasant environment, peace, clean air waiting for the guests, and there are several fishing lakes here as well.

44. Unicum

The Unicum bitter liqueur is an official Hungaricum. The receipt was patented in 1883 by Janos Zwack and co. Otherwise the beverage is mostly made of herbs. Interesting that the company was nationalized but the company gave false receipt to the state, and the real beverage mostly used as aperitif was manufactured in Italy. Later the company was bought back from the state.

45. Ócsai Marsh forest

The Ócsa Marsh forest is a unique natural value of Hungary. Unfortunately nowadays the forest not always covered with water during the year. Ócsa is located app. 25km from Budapest in South direction. The Marsh forest is little bit more far from Budapest than Ócsa in Bugyi direction, from the asphalt road a table shows the entrance of the marked path left from Ócsa direction after a slight bend in the dense forest. The marked path is approximately 2-3km long, after it arrives to the Selyem (Silk) meadow, where there is place where families can have a picnic and have some facilities as well for sports for example. Apart from the path the area can be water covered, so a boot is useful in this periods. It is interesting to see the ascending bubbles in the water of the forest (if the season in not to dry..). There are several stations along the path where they show different aspects of the area and the wildlife of the area. Sometimes we can see some wildlife as well with our own eyes, if not many people visited the area before us.

46. Dobostorta

The Dobos cake is a real Hungarian speciality or Hungarikum in other words. It was first made in 1884 by Dobos C. József a confectioner from Budapest. The cake was a big succes all over Europe not just in Hungary. Dobos doesn’t reveal the recipe before his retirement. The main ingredient was a butter in the chocolate which was not known at that time. After his retirement he gave the recipe to the confectioner community in Budapest, so after everybody can use that and was not a secret anymore.

47. Fertod Eszterhazy Castle

The Fertod Eszterhazy Castle perhaps the most famous Baroque Castle in Hungary. Fertod is located in the West part of the country next to Austria, near Lake Ferto. First the Castle was a smaller Hunting Castle, but after Prince Miklos was inspired by the Versailles Castle in France. When he return home they started to reshape the area which was a marsh area with lots of bugs, and partly covered with water here and there (there are still similar areas in the neighborhood). Joseph Haydn played music for the Eszterhazy family here.

48. Keszthely Festetics Castle

Keszthely is located in the West part of Lake Balaton. The other finest Baroque Castle was built by the Croatian originated Festetics family who lived in Hungary since the 17th century. I. George the member of the family started the Georgikon the first Agricultural College in Hungary. In the Castle there are many events like classical music concerts, wine tasting and many others.

49. Szeged Open air theatre

Szeged located in South-East Hungary. It is also famous about it’s Paprika and Pick salami. There is a nice zoo and arboretum can be find here as well. The city was almost
completely flooded in 1879. The Szeged Open air theatre is very popular.

50. Parlament, Budapest

The Hungarian Parlement is the biggest in Continental Europe and the third biggest in the World as
far as I know. The building is 96m high, as many buildings built for the Millemium (1896 when the Magyars invaded this land in 896). The building has many rooms (691) and the Hungarian Crown is also here.

51. Opera, Budapest

The Neo-renaissance building designed by Miklos Ybl was built in 1884. One of the directors was Gustav Mahler. The Erkel theatre also connected to the Opera in the I.Janos Pal square, there also perform operas there.

52. Gulash soup

The Gulash soup first made by nomadic Herdsmen from Beef with paprika is a Trademark of Hungary. Now they make it from pork as well, and there is a bean Gulash which is perhaps tastier than the original.

53. Paprika of Szeged

The best Hungarian Paprika comes from the shiny Szeged.

54. Onion of Mako

The best Onion is said to be from Mako near Szeged.

55. Vecsés cabbage

The Vecses cabbage is also famous.

56. Zsolnay porcelaine

The Zsolnay porcelaine manufacture was founded by Miklos Zsolnay. Apart from porcelain they produce tiles for architecture as well for example the roof tiles of the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest are made by Zsolnay. The Eozin material discovered by them won many prizes in the World Exhibition.

57. Herendi porcelaine

The Herend porcelaine is also well known around the World. The company was found in 1826 by Vince Stingl. Later Mor Fisher bought the company. The Herend porcelain manufacture is the biggest in the World. They won many prizes in different World Exhibitions. Queen Victoria also ordered a porcelain with butterflies and flowers from them at the London World exhibition.

58. Matyo folk art

Matyo folk art is also a curiosity in Hungary. Especially the broderie and the traditional costume is famous. This art is connected to Mezokovesd and the surrounding area in North Hungary. There is a spa there as well with unique medical water with sulfate.

59. Zemplen forests

The Zemplen hills located in the far Northeast part of the country. The area is quit unique regarding wildlife, lots of interesting species can be found there.

60. Bory Castle, Szekesfehervar

Jeno Bory was a sculptor and architect in Szekesfehérvár in Northern transdanubia. He made a famous staue of Joseph Haydn in Eszterhaza (Fertod) among others. He build the famous Castle named after him in Szekesfehervar with many statues and paintings in it. The original goal with the building was to use as home. The building is 30m high with several towers, 3 ateliers and 30 different sized rooms.

61. Jak Temple

The famous Jak temple in West Hungary was built in the 13th century in Roman style. The Vajdahunyad Castle entrance in the Budapest city park is a copy of the Jak temple.

62. Noszvaj cave houses

In Noszvaj near Eger in North Hungary very interesting cave houses can be found. In 1930 70 such house (flat) existed all carved in the vulcanic rock. The first such houses thought made in 1800. The Delamotte Castle is also located there which is surrounded by a 25 acre garden, only can be visited with guidance from 1st of April till 3rd of November every year. This is a like a miniature Castle in Baroque-Copf style.

63. Tarodi Castle, Sopron

The Tarodi Castle was hand made by István Taródi (mostly himself before and after work) between 1959 and 2010 in Sopron West Hungary. He himself and with his sons and some irregular help he managed to put 150-200 railway wagon quantity of stone in the building. The area of the Castle is 4300m2, and the highest tower is 20m high. The garden is also beautiful with egzotic plants included. The Castle is located in Sopron in the Lővér area.

64. Tes Windmills

Tes is the highest located settlement in the Bakony hills, in 459 height above sea level. The windmills here are historical curiosities. There are two windmills, the bigger can produce 400kg flour, the smaller just the 200kg. The mills today still usable.

65. Szilvasvarad Szalajka valley

The beautiful Szalajka valley in Szilvasvarad in the Bukk hills in North Hungary is one of the most popular place for excursions in Hungary. There is a nice waterfall, caves, lakes there as well. Enjoyable in summer or winter alike.

66. Monostori bastion Komarom

The Monostori stronghold in Komarom was part of the complex Komarom defense system. It is a huge stronghold on a huge 25,680 m2 area. Several film was recorded here. In the building there are 640 rooms. Parts of the stronghold are under the ground, others above the ground. Interestingly not really visible from above as it covered with grass. The Russian used it as an ammo storage place.

67. Ipolytarnóc stone tree

In Ipolytarnoc North from Budapest the biggest tree can be found which become stone. The tree is 100m long and has 8m periphery. The tree was conserved by vulcano and the river digged out of the rock. According to scientist the findings are 17-23 million years old.

68. Matra hills

The Matra hills are a very nice place in North Hungary. Hungary’s highest point Kekestető (1014m above sea level) is also located here. There are the most spring can be found here as well. Popular settlements Kekestető, Galyatető, Mátrafüred, Parádfürdő.

69. Lake Ferto and the neighboring areas

Lake Ferto is the most West steppe Lake near Austria. In fact there is an Austrian and Hungarian part as well, the Austrian part is bigger. The area of the shallow lake is 309 km2. The lake with the neighboring mostly wine growing areas is a World Heritage site.

70. Sarospatak

Sarospatak is located in the far East part of the country, on the banks of the Bodrog river. There is a Castle there, spa as well, Museums about the famous Hungarian count Rakoczi. The nearby areas are very nice natural areas: forests, lakes.

71. Debrecen flower festival

Debrecen is a second biggest city in Hungary, but much smaller than Budapest, it has only 208,000 inhabitants, while Budapest has 1,7 Million. The city is known about Calvinism, the most famous building is the Big church in the city center. Debrecen is located in the Great Plain is East Hungary. There is a University here, a Mediterranean-style spa and a zoo as well in the popular forest area called Nagyerdo (Big forest).

72. Hajduszoboszlo thermal spa

Hajduszoboszlo is a smaller town near Debrencen but boasts with the biggest spa complex in all Europe. Hajduszoboszlo is one of the top destination in Hungary. There are many separate facilities for bathing, warm water – cold water, adventure bath, medical water what you prefer. In summer can be more crowded.

73. Orseg

Orseg is a lovely village area next to the Austrian and Slovenian border. The area 55% covered with mostly pine forests. What is unique they kept the original village lifestyle to make natural foods like different oils, cheeses. Some of the farms can join to the process as well. There are several lakes nearby, the Zala river originate here which is the main water supply of Lake Balaton. The most popular places are Őriszentpéter and Szalafő.

74. Gyula Spa and Castle

Gyula is also one of Hungary’s top destination in the far South-East part of the country. There is a Big bath here as well, and a brick Castle as well. A popular tourist spot. There are lots of organized events here as well.

75. Szigliget

Szigliget is a small settlement next to Lake Balaton. It is famous about the hill with a Castle ruin with a nice view on the Lake and on the surrounding wine-growing areas. There is an Eszterhazy Castle as well, which is now more of a garden maintained by the local artists / painters.

76. Balatonfured

Balatonfüred is one of the biggest town next to Lake Balaton. Together with Siofok sometimes referred as the capital of the Balaton. It is a lovely place with a nice harbor, the annual Anna ball is also held here. There is a heart hospital here where Rabindranath Tagore was treated as well among many others, and the alley was named after him. He planted a tree here after his recovery along with others.

77. Sarvar spa and Castle

Sarvar is also an interesting Spa city in West Hungary. There are many forests nearby, there is a Castle and a nice Arboretum as well and the Raba river flows next to the city. There are two boating lake as well. A safe bet.

78. Sumeg Castle

Sumeg is famous about it’s Castle in the Balaton uplands area. The Castle is quite nice and there are many events here during the year as well.

79. the Danube bend

The 60km Danuben bend from Budapest to Esztergom is a unique natural heritance of Hungary. The Danube flows between the nice hills and there are very nice cities Castles and island here as well.

80. Szigetkoz

Szigetköz is an interesting natural area near Győr. The name refers to the area is located between rivers.

81. Nagycenk

Nagycenk is famous about the Szechenyi Castle, and the alley with the huge trees. It is located in West Hungary not far from Austria. The biggest Magyar lived here.

82. Lake Balata

Lake Balata is a natural reserve in South Transdanubia. It has a unique wildlife. The Lake is hard to access. The only place where posionous snakes originally live in Hungary.

83. Marevar valley

The Marevar valley is in the Mecsek hills in South Transdanubia. The popular Hungarian film about the Turkish invasion called Stars of Eger was filmed here.

84. Little Balaton

The Little Balaton nature reserve can be found in the Soutwest side of Lake Balaton on the Zala river. It is a natural filter of the water of the Zala river, before enters to the Lake. The shallow water is very good for the birdlife. The nature reserve can be accessed by the Kanyavary island. Pygmy cormorants, Great egrets, White tailed eagles, Herons, Kingfisher can be found there with many other birds.

85. Hegyestu

Hegyestű is a 337m high vulcanic hill at the Balaton uplands area (Kali basin). The basalt vulcano is 5-6 million year old according to scientists. The view is very unique in Hungary, even in Europe. The lava inside the crater makes multangular vertical columns

86. Kekkut

Kekkut is most famous about the Theodora mineral water in Hungary which is coming from the well here. It is also located in the Kali basin in the Balaton uplands area. The oldest Reed covered house in the Kali basin also located here.

87. Egerszalok

Egerszalok is famous about the Spa hotel and the salt hill next to it. It is only 6km from Eger.

88. Szabolcs

Szabolcs is famous about the old Soil fortress, which is the only one that is remained in Hungary. Soil fortresses was very common before the 13th century all over Hungary.

89. Turistvandi

Turistvándi is a lovely settlement in East Hungary. It has an old Watermill on the exotic Tur river.

90. Abaliget

Abaliget is located in South Transdanubia. It is famous about the cave there in the beautiful Mecsek hills area.

91. Szombathely Roman era ruins

Szombathely was called Savaria in the Roman era. Under the inner city still many valuable archeological finds buried under the ground.

92. Kiskunsag salty lakes

The salty lakes of Kiskunság area gives home to plentiful birdlife including threatened species. In summer the lakes can get dry temporarily.

93. Irottko

The Irottko naturpark is located in West Hungary. It is a huge green area included several settlements, viewpoints and cellars as well. It is a very interesting area with nice nature, and beautiful settlements. Kőszeg is one of the most popular.

94. Barcs and Somogy county forests

The Transdanubian areas South from Lake Balaton, are very valuable mostly forest covered areas with plentiful wildlife till the Drava river at the country border.

95. Zalaszanto

Zalaszanto is an interesting little settlement near Heviz. There is a Buddhist stypa there on a small hill in naturally protected nice forest area, a water mill museum and a Mezeskalacs (Honey cake) house as well.

96. Somogyvar

Somogyvar is famous about the Szechenyi Castle and the 24 hectare garden which is an arboretum, there is a giant redwood here among others. Apart from the Castle there is a well which was thought has magical power. Other intersting activity is they put horse shoes on eggs here (smaller one).

97. Salfold

Salfold is a small village North from Lake Balaton in the area called Kali basin. It is famous about the interesting “Stone sea” in the border area and the folk art, and old houses in the settlement. The area is sometimes referred as the Hungarian Tuscany.

98. Nadasdladany

Nadasdladany is located near to the East part of Lake Balaton. It is famous about the Nadasdy Castle. The Castle was built around 1880 based on English and Scottish Castles. The park of the Castle is quite nice as well.

99. Cuha spring valley

The Cuha spring valley is located in the central parts of Bakony hills. The beautiful Canyon can be visited with a small sized train as well. The most beautiful parts is located between Porva-Csesznek and Vinye.

100. Szatmarcseke

Szatmarcseke is located in East Hungary. It is famous about the cemetery with boat shape wood grave markers.
