We list below the most popular spas in Hungary. Most popular spas are Budapest spas (Szechenyi, Gellert, Rudas, etc) Heviz, Hajduszoboszlo, Zalakaros, Bukfurdo, Gyula, Sarvar, Berekfurdo, Harkany, Miskolctapolca (I do not use long letters which not exist in English, furdo means bath).

Hajduszoboszlo

Hajduszoboszlo is located in East Hungary, near Debrecen and the Hortobagy steppe area. It is one of the most popular spa city in Hungary. There are more different facilities can be found here with different purpose or different kind of water. There is adventure bath, summer beach and medical bath as well, and several hotels as well with thermal water.

Zalakaros

Zalakaros can be found in Southwest Transdanubia not far from Lake Balaton. It is a very enjoyable place. The huge spa complex has lots of different pools, and there are many organized programs also available during the year.

Bukfurdo

Heviz

Heviz is a most popular city in Hungary associated with thermal water. Heviz has a unique natural hot water lake. The area of the lake is 4 hectares. The water is coming from the cave below the Lake in 38 meter depth. The Lake has hot and cold water supply as well. One can fing huge quantity wellness hotels here.

Hungary is rich in thermal water. There are many thermal water under the surface. Ferenc Pávai Vajna executed a great deal of job in discovering thermal waters in Hungary. The table below features the main characteristics about the thermal spas in Hungary.

The thermal or mineral water

Different mineral waters (medicinal, mineral waters) can be defined. There are mineral medicinal waters with smaller amount of absorbed material, salicide waters, hydrocarbonate waters, sulfide waters, soda waters, ferrate, sulfate waters, bromid-iodid waters, and radioactive, radon content waters (for example lake Heviz). For acid and stomach problems the hydrocarbonate water can be the most useful (for example Bükkszéki Salvus water which can be drunk). Some water can be very effective when inhalating it (sulfide waters), others only by drinking them. Waters with radon content is good against pain and vein problems. (Hévíz, Eger, Budapest Gellért and Budapest Rudas medicinal baths). Iodine helps for Thyroid, but in certain cases (over function) the water with iodine content is not recommended. At the same time iodine water is not very ofthen available in Hungary, only the sea salt contains iodine. Mineral water containing iodine can be found for example in Hajduszoboszlo, Berekfurdo and Gyor. Waters with sulfide content are recommended for hand and leg joint problems, abrasion (Harkány, Mezőkövesd, Csisztapuszta, Balf) as well as for skin and heart along with circulation problems.

The absorbed content of the mineral water can be quite different in quantity, and the water itself can belong to different categories. In case of medical water, the content can precisely be checked (in mg/l).

Waters above 30 degree Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) are called thermal waters.

Introduction spas in Hungary

Several spas in Hungary can be seen in below map. ( Perhaps not all, always appear new locations, and some locations are perhaps not detected, and sometimes happens that a spa is closed for some reasons). It can be seen on the map that there is a spa almost everywhere in the area of Hungary.

Hungary is rich in thermal waters. Usually the big older “traditional” Spas are not located in big cities in Hungary. These spas can be found usually in smaller towns or villages with nice natural surrounding, and peace.

The baths are differ in size: some of them are quite small with one or two pools, others are huge with lots of services, slides, plenty of pools, and green area. I prefer the outside ones over the inside ones even in winter.

Thermal water in Hungary

There are many thermal water in Hungary. It is a natural condition in Hungary. In the past there was a sea under Hungary’s current area. It is known from the digging under Lake Balaton for example. The layer under the layer under the lake, contains traces of sea snails. The thermal water in Hungary has many variety: different colours, temperatures, and content.

In Hungary we recognize medical waters, which has been certified by the Hungarian state. Some thermal waters are medical waters other are not, some of them perhaps a medical water, but has’nt been certified yet.

Most popular spas in Hungary

The Below spas are the most popular ones in Hungary.

Hajduszoboszlo

Hajduszoboszlo is one of the most popular spa in Hungary. There are many facilities here with different entrances. It is not so easy even to understand what to do where, which kind of ticket we want.

To make it less complicated there are three or four separate facilities are there: on open bath, an adventure bath, a medical bath, and on top of that few separate spa hotels.

Hajduszoboszlo is situated in the Great plain, near to Debrecen not far from the Hortobagy area. Regarding the water everything can be found here, thermal or non-thermal, medial, adventure, in several levels, you can walk on pebbles, can try different water temperatures in numerous pools.

If money doesn’t matter it is easy to spend much, but if we want to control the budget there are cheaper versions of ticket available as well, like afternoon tickets or restricted tickets, based on what kind of fancy we prefer.

Obviously non-restricted full time tickets are the most expensive ones.

Apart from the spas there are other possibilities to enjoy the times here, for example a mini- train, nice spacious areas to walk, and many shops and restaurants.

Zalakaros

Zalakaros is also one of the most popular bath city in Hungary. Zalakaros situated in Southern Transdanubia, South from Lake Balaton, below the “Kis Balaton” (Little Balaton) nature reserve area. The Little Balaton with it’s shallow water cleans the water of the Zala river, Balaton’s water supply.

Zalakaros is originally also a small quiet settlement, but the invention of thermal water makes it very interesting, huge hotels, and big roads can be found here, which is not usual at such sized places here.

Buk

Buk is situated near the Austrian border. Buk is one of the most popular spa in Hungary, partly because it is near to the country border I guess.

Egerszalok

Egerszalok is famous about it’s white salt cliffs. Egerszalok can be found very close to Eger and Demjen in North part of Hungary, little East from Budapest.

The spa now can be found in the new, five storey Spa hotel.

Gyula

Gyula is a traditional spa city. It can be found near to the Romanian border. It is a very popular spa in Hungary, one of the most popular among the others listed here. Gyula is located in the Great plain, the Southest parts are one of the least visited. A Castle made of brick can be found here together with a big spa. The spa is similar to the Spa in Zalakaros in size, there are more than 10 pools here. The smaller sized city is also very enjoyable. Unfortunately it is little far from Budapest.

Sarvar

Sarvar is can be found in Transdanubia, not far from Austria, but not to close either. A nice Castle also can be found here, with a museum. The Castle can be found in a nice Park. There are several boating lake is can be found here as well, and the Raba river flows at the borders of the city.

There are also huge forested areas can be found here, a nice arboretum as well and horse riding possibilities.

The spa is well organized with different programs during the year.

Kehidakustany

Kehidakustany is near to Lake Balaton (North-west part). If the weather is not sunny, which happens with us as well, the obvious targets apart from the Veszprem zoo, is spas, where we don’t care about rain or temperatures in the thermal water.

Kehidakustany is very small settlement with several separated places. When we arrived here in winter even the doors of the resort wasn’t closed which is unique in Hungary.

The Zala river which supply the Balaton flows through the village.

The facility is a very nice, new bath with external and internal pools as well.

Miskolctapolca

In Miskolctapolca a unique cave spa can be found. It is very interesting. The spa is inside the real cave. The entry hall and the restaurant are not in the cave nor the lockers and showers, but most of the pools are in the cave. The places are not small or huge, but quite enjoyable. There are external parts of the spa as well, these are like a normal bath.
A nice boating lake also can be found there.

Harkany

Harkany can be found at the Southest part of Hungary, near Pecs. Quite a nice, calm place with a nice spa with unique thermal medical water.

Gyoparosfurdo

You normally don’t find Gyoparosfurdo on a map, because Gyoparosfurdo is a name of the spa area in Oroshaza. Oroshaza situated in East Hungary North from Szeged. Here not only a spa can be found but there are several lakes around there as well. In summer one of the lakes are used for bathing as well, this makes the spa even more interesting.

Morahalom

Morahalom can be found in South Hungary near Szeged. Morahalom is a small settlement. Very quiet and relaxing only the main road is a bit noisier.

Gyor

In Gyor a new spa can be found. The spa has inside and outside parts as well. Gyor is not a tipical spa city. A tipical spa city in Hungary usually has 10,000 or less inhabitants. Gyor is relatively a bigger city in Hungary with it’s approximately 127,000 inhabitants.

Berekfurdo

Berekfurdo is a small settlement with app 1000 inhabitants in East Hungary, South from the Hortobagy National Park Area.

Nyiregyhaza

Unique spas in Hungary

In Heviz a unique hot water lake can be found, in Miskolctapolca a cave spa can be found. In Egerszalok a salt rock can be found near the spa. No it is part of the wellness Hotel.

Some of them are located in Transdanubia, other between the river Danube and river Tisza, some of the in East side of the country over the Tisza. Some of them are located in a very rarely populated area. Some of them are even cannot be found on a map.

Budapest spas

The most popular spas in Budapest are: the Szechenyi (biggest spa in Europe), Rudas, Veli bej and Gellert. Other Spas in Budapest are the Kiraly, the Lukacs, the
Apart from that there are several open bath also be found in Budapest. Most of them are beautiful surrounding: on Margaret island, the Romai, Csillaghegyi, and Csepeli.

The Szechenyi

The Most popular is the Szechenyi in the city park, this is what I also suggest to visit. There are three outside pool there, and many internal pools with different water temperatures from 20 to 40 degree Celsius in small steps.

The spa inherit it’s name after Istvan Szechenyi, or the other name “The Biggest Hungarian.”
What is famous about him, that he offered one-year of his earning for the purpose of the Academy of Sciences in Hungary.

He also organized many things in Hungary like the Building of the Chain Bridge, river regulation and many others.

The spa is located in nice historic surrounding. The blue water, the historic environment makes the time spent here very special. Most visitors are tourists. Local people also frequently visit here, but usually minority in numbers.0

In time of the Sziget festival (spa ticket can be included in festival tickets) in August sometimes the spa can be full. It is very rare. The thermal water of the spa comes more than 1000 meter depth form the ground.

The Gellert

The Gellert spa can be found at one of the most prestigious place in Budapest, at the bottom of Gellert hill, in the 5 star Spa Hotel. The Hotel often gives home to international spa conferencies. If you want premium service with lots of medical treatment, perhaps this place can be very interesting. There are external and internal pools available here as well, like in the Szechenyi.
