There are three public entrance of the Baradla cave: The Aggtelek entrance, Vorosto entrance four km from Aggtelek, and the exit point at Josvafo. Some parts are constructed with concrete pavement and lighting system and some parts are not so much developed. Things to do and see in Aggtelek Hungary

The main attractions are the caves here, most people spend their time at the caves and the entrance buildings.
The really near Aggtelek area is consists of small villages and natural, protected areas.
At the Aggtelek entrance there are some facilities next to the Cave entrance. Can be bought presents here there are restaurants and some buffets as well. The area is part of the National Park, a highly protected valuable natural area of Hungary. Beautiful forests can also be found here. There are several lakes as well nearby. As Aggtelek is very near to Slovakia, the caves are continuing there as well. The Slovakian part settlement called Domica.

Things to do and see nearby and little farer

Josvafo is also a very nice place at the end of the longer cave tours. A very good restaurant can be found here, next to an interesting shallow spring. A very nice cheap restaurant with excellent quality food. I don’t mean excellent like a 5 star hotel or an exclusive restaurant in Budapest, it is a very little settlement at one of the most abandoned parts of Hungary. There is an interesting, beautiful reservoir in East direction from Josvafo the Rakaca reservoir near Szalonna village. Miskolc and Eger are the two biggest city near Aggtelek. There is a lot to see there: there is a huge Castle in Miskolc, a Zoo in the forest, Lillafured is very near to Miskolc and one of the most beautiful place in Hungary, which is situated in valley among fully forested hills, with a huge Castle hotel, next to a beautiful lake. In Miskolctapolca a unique cave spa can be found. Eger is famous about it’s castle/fortress and winemaking. Szepasszony valley is a very nice area for wine lovers. There are several spas also can be found nearby: Egerszalok a wellness/spa hotel can be found, in Demjen a spa village just a several km from Egerszalok, there is a Spa is Bogacs, and Mezokovesd (Zsory spa) as well, which city is famous about it’s special Hungarian traditional brodery. Little farer in East direction the Zemplen hills can be found. This is perhaps one of the less populated parts of Hungary, with aboundant wildlife and three Castles/ruins in Boldogkovaralja, Fuzer and Regec. There are several Castles there in Keked, Fuzerradvany. In Vizsoly a first Hungarian translated bible (1590) can be seen. Beautiful forests lakes can be seen there.

Csesznek is located in the heart of the Bakony hills region. The most beautiful places are located here – in Csesznek, Fenyofo, Bakonybel area. This is the so called high Bakony, with ancient forests, and huge green areas. Csesznek is most known about the Castle ruin, and most hiking tours starts here.

This area most recommended for nature lovers and hikers, but for them it is quite an interesting area.

Csesznek attractions
Cseszneki vár

The Castle is one of the main attraction of Csesznek. It was built in the 13th century after the Tatarian invasion (1241-1242). The neighborhood of the Castle at that time was rich both in wildlife and in natural beauty like now, because of this the owners were the richest nobles in Hungary.

The first Castle was built by Baron Jacob, who was a Sword carrying master, later Csák family become the
Owner, later Anjou Karoly, Zsigmond of Luxemburg, the Garay family, later the famous Eszterhazy family, who rebuild the stone Stronghold to a Baroque Castle and used that way. During the Turkish invasion it was used as a stronghold, the very advantageously located building. Lorinc Wathay who defended the Castle later died during an incident. He wanted to fire an old Cannon when he was drunk in 1571, which finally exploded, and he died as well, together with his friend who wanted to stop him. Eszterhazy family sold the Castle in 1780, which later was burnt and there was an earthquake as well. Archeologist worked on the Castle since the 1970’s.

Some entrance fee must be payed before enter the Castle.

The little curious Red Fox on the picture we found next to the asphalt road between Csesznek and Bakonybel. He was very curious when we first saw him after we went back with the car and he again comes out of the forest, this is when I took the photo. This was not the only red fox in the area, there was an other near to Csesznek as well, which we can observer from a hunter’s hide. This was an interesting adventure.

A környék rendkívül kellemes a természetre áhítozóknak.

Horse riding

There is a possibility for horse riding as well.

Cseszneki várjátékok

Jelenleg (2015) az Alsó-vár részen felújítás zajlik, ami remélhetőleg jövőre kész lesz.
2016 augusztus 6.

Things to do and see in the neighborhood

The walley of the Cuha spring is a very interesting possibility, the most beautiful sections are in the Vinye Porva Csesznek region. In the canyon a small train is also runs in the summer period, otherwise must start and cannot spare the several hour walk. Zirc also worth to look as the capital of the region at with it’s very nice botanical garden.

Apartments in the neighborhood

There are not many apartments nearby, apart from the Erzsebet guesthouse, we stayed there and it was quite a pleasant place.

Orseg Hungary

Orseg Hungary (Őrség in Hungarian)

Őrség Őrségi látnivalók nevezetességek 1

Orseg Hungary (Őrség in Hungarian)
Introduction

Orseg is a very interesting place in Hungary. Situated at the South-West part of the country at the bottom of the Alps next to Austrian and Slovenian border. Little villages can be found here in harmony with the nature with a little population. The area mainly covered with forests. Orseg has a special micro climate, the area now protected and belongs to Orseg National Park. Pottery and other handcrafts is popular in the Orseg, in some places the visitors also can try out pottery for example. Magyarszombatfa is where most potters live. The area’s capital is Oriszentpeter (Őriszentpéter). Several beautiful lakes can be found in the Orseg area. Vadasa lake can be found in Hegyhatszentjakab, and Borostyan lake after Zalalovo. Szalafo is a very interesting place, the Szala in the name refers to Zala river, which is a main water supply for Lake Balaton. Here a family runs a farm where the visitors can check all kinds of agricultural work has been doing there. Petrol station can be found in Oriszentpeter, and a very good restaurant at Bajansenye. Events are organised here by the National Park and the settlements as well for example in Szalafo during all summer.

Where to go in Orseg?

Orseg Hungary
I would recommend Oriszentpeter and Szalafo first if you plan to visit Orseg area. Oriszentpeter is the center of the region, and these two cities are the most popular target here. Oriszentpeter is not like a normal town or village, this settlement is consists of parts called -szer, there are no street names like almost everywhere else in Hungary they call them -szer. The parts of the settlement is quite scattered, not in a block like in a normal city. The river Zala which is a biggest water supply for Lake Balaton is originated in Szalafo and crosses Oriszentpeter as well. The very origin of the Zala river is a natural reserve area forbidden to visit, but can check at Oriszentpeter not far from the school. It looks very nice, but here is not a big river just a smaller spring.
Őrség Őrségi látnivalók nevezetességek 2

Why is it so popular?

Among Hungarian tourists the Orseg area is very popular. When I first visited it, I found nice, but not particularly interesting. Forest, lakes, small villages. What makes the Orseg area interesting the people who live there. Many people live the old style of life, which characterize the people decades or centuries ago. Everything is simple and natural. Man made cheese, oils, pottery. Peace. Dream for the people from the bigger cities.

In Õrség there are no industrial facilities and more than 50% of the area is forest therefore the air and the environment is exceptionally clean. The tranquility of Õrség is attractive to many tourists. The pursuants of “gentle torism” can perambulate this picturesque land on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or by horse-driven rig. There are many marked hiking trails.
In summer generally hot days are followed by refreshing nights because the cold air from the Alps is flowing down the valleys. This sudden temperature change results in heavy dew-fall during the summer nights.
There is a forest reserve in Szalafõ called “ancient forest” (õserdõ in Hungarian) where has not been any forestry work ever. There are many rare animal and plant species in the Õrség National Reserve. An open air museum consisting of old peasant houses and a storied produce storing house can be found in Szalafõ.
Ancient handicrafts can be learned from the (elderly) masters, such as basket weaving, pottery, wood carving or kópic weaving. Kópic is a container for dry produce such as seeds made out of hay and willow bark.
Õrség is the best mushrooming place in Hungary; the most delicious mushrooms such as chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarius) and penny bun (Boletus edulis) can be found here in large quantities in the summer if the weather is rainy enough. Of course you first need to acquaint yourself with an expert mushroom hunter who kwnows some good sites if you want to be successful. But you should not collect mushrooms if you do not know them. Unfortunately the death cap (Amanita phalloides) also grows in large quantities in Õrség. A single piece of death cap is poisonous enough to kill 5 people, so watch your little children closely if you are walking the forests in summer.
Many early medieval monuments are located in Õrség. The St. Wendelin church is in Kercaszomor. There is a Romanesque church in Õriszentpéter; the building was converted into a fortress during the Turkish occupation. A Romanesque church dedicated to the Trinity is located in Velemér. Its building time is unknown. The frescos on the walls are the work of János Aquila from 1377-1378.
If you want to travel between villages, it is best to use a car, because public transport is infrequent.

Wildlife in Orseg area

The wildlife of Õrség is very diversified, it is a favorite place for hunters. The hunting period for red deer (cervus elaphus) is from 30 August to 1 February. The hunting period for roe deer is from 15 April to 30 September. The prohibition period for kid roe deer is from 1 October to 3 March. The male wild bore (razorback) can be hunted all year, while female wild bore can be hunted from 1 February to 30 April. There is a hunters’association in Õriszentpéter under the adress: 9941 Õriszentpéter, Galambosszer 37.
