The aim with this page and it’s sub-pages to show lots of possible interesting tourist targets in detail in Hungary. What are the attractions, possibilities, how to get there, what to do there. The destinations can be found at the sub-pages listed right side of this page. The list is continuously growing with new places. If you don’t find something on the website, not necessary means that is not there, I suggest to put in the search window at the top of the page the topic you interested about. Not everything seems from the menu system. Perhaps the thing you interested about doesn’t appear in the first place, usually lots of results provided.
The Lake Tisza is a very interesting place especially for nature lovers and adventure seekers. If someone seeks luxury and comfort perhaps not the number one place you can find. The biggest open air beach is in Abadszalok can be found. Lots of space, huge slides, catering services, boat renting possibilities can be found here, and lots of organized programs throughout the year, but mostly in summer. The newly built Okocenter in Poroszlo has the biggest freswater Aquarium in Europe with huge fishes representing the area’s fauna.
Lillafured is one of my favourite place in Hungary. Simply it is stunning. Everything is beautiful here: the Lake Hamori, the spring that fills it with water, the waterfalls in the garden of the Palace Hotel, the village, the surrounding forests, and hills. On top of that there are two caves nearby, one of them is just under the Palace Hotel, the other is a little farer. Lillafured is a common place in Hungary for honeymoon. in Miskolc direction an open air zoo can be find, and a little farer the famous Miskolctapolca cave bath.
Eger is a historical city of North Hungary. Here the small defender team defeat the huge Turkish army in 1552. The huge Castle ruin is the main attraction here, together with the Szepasszony valley wineries. In Eger a newly built spa complex also can be found. Eger is a charming city, with a historical inner city. The surrounding areas are also beautiful.
The Pannonhalma Archabbey is a very interesting Unesco world heritage site of Hungary. Modern and old buildings, unmeasurable cultural and historical values can be find here in beautiful natural surrounding. The archabbey is a home of 40 monks, library, winery, restaurant, botanical garden can be found here, everything on a small hill above a fishing lake.
Tokaj is a very interesting place in Northeast Hungary. Tokaj is famous about the Aszu dessert wine, which is produced because of the area special micro-climate. In Tokaj the River Tisza Hungary’s second biggest river joins with River Bodrog. The River Bodrog is one of the most popular river for canoe tours in Hungary. The area is beautiful, with thick vegetation, and plentiful wildlife.
Zalakaros is located in Southwest Hungary, not very far from Lake Balaton . It is one of the most popular touristic target in Hungary. The huge bath complex has 19 indoor and outdoor pools, included medical, adventure, kids pool, swimming pool with all kinds of services.
Hajduszoboszlo is the biggest “Thermal city” in Hungary, and in Europe as well. The huge Spa complex consists of several facilities, like an open air beach, Adventure bath, Medical bath. Hajduszoboszlo is located in East Hungary near Debrecen and the Hortobagy plains.
Szarvas is a very interesting place in East-Hungary. A beautiful botanical garden, Koros river backwater, Spa and nice restaurants can be find here. Nearby the beautiful botanical garden of Tiszakurt is also worth to look at. The spa at Cserkeszolo is also very nice.
Aggtelek is a small village in the Northern hills in Hungary. It is famous about it’s natural values, namely the huge Cave system. The Aggtelek – Domica Baradla stalactite cave system is 25km long according to today’s knowledge, and it is a Unesco World Heritage site in Hungary. About 160,000 people visit the Baradla cave every year. The cave has there entrances, with a beautiful buildings at each entrance. There are many more cave in this Karst region. Apart from the caves there are many natural values of the area as well. The area belongs to the Aggtelek karst National Park in Hungary.
South Transdanubia is an interesting area, rich in natural values. The unique river Drava bordering the area from South, which serves as a natural border between Hungary and Croatia as well. Szigetvar is historical city in this region. A unique old Castle-Fortress-Mosque and a beautiful new Spa can be find here. This fortress is very famous in the Hungarian history.
Szentendre is a small town North from Budapest. It is a part of the beautiful Danube bend cities: Szentendre Visegrad Esztergom. Szentendre was a village with usual agriculture like winemaking in the past but not anymore. A Skanzen (Village museum) shows how the life went in years before at this land. At the bottom of the Pilis hills, next to the Danube this little city was very attractive to many artists, especially for painters. Many painters lived here, they had an official groups as well. There are many museum also can be found here in the narrow streets of this picturesque settlement.
If you ask Hungarians about Labod I guess 80% of them has no idea where it is, or what are the interesting things there. Labod is not really a popular tourist target itself, it is a small quiet settlement but has a beautiful lake system outside in the village in the Somogy forests with several otters raised by humans, that can be seen in the nearby house. In appropriate times white tailed Eagles catches fishes in the lake system, and several other species as Kingfisher, Ferruginous duck, Great crested grebe and White storks can be seen.
The Bakony hills region is one of the most beautiful natural region of Hungary. Csesznek is a beautiful village in the heart of Bakony hills. Around a huge green area with dense wildlife can be seen. There are horse riding possibility as well in the beautiful settlement.
The Orseg area is an interesting region in Hungary next to the Austrian and Slovenian border, where seems the time has stopped in the little villages. This is very appealing for people living in the cities. Hand made oils, pottery, cheese. Forest around everywhere. The forest coverage of the area is 55%.
Berekfurdo is a small village at the foot of the Great Hortobagy plains with high value medical water and rich wildlife. There are two lakes there as well.
Komarom is an interesting historical city with a fortress system and a Spa also can be found here in Northwest Hungary. Komarom is a double city: there is a city at both sides of the Danube, one at the Hungarian side and on at the Slovakian side as well. Between the two parts a steel bridge allows the traffic.
Fuzer in Hungarian Füzér
is located in the NorthEastern part of the country. This is one of the most abandoned part of Hungary, with lots of forests and natural beauty. Fuzer is a famous about it’s Castle / Strongold on the cliff. The Hungarian Crown was hidden here in the 16th century. The Castle visible from everywhere in the small settlement. Fuzer is so small, that the asphalt road to the village is silent for hours during the day, which is unique in Hungary. The neighboring mostly natural areas in Hungary and Slovakia as well are beautiful. Near Fuzer Holloko is famous about it’s Porcelain factory.
Sopron is an interesting city near the Austrian city border. Sopron is a middle sized city, with app 50,000 inhabitants. Sopron located in a beautiful surrounding, with nice hills and forests, and the city has a huge history as well, there are lots of museums can be found there. There are several very nice restaurants can be found here as well, with excellent quality food. Sopron is near to Lake Ferto as well, a 300 km2 steppe lake in Europe which is the furthest in Western direction. The surrounding of the Lake is a Unesco World Heritage site, and the Lake Ferto National park is a joint National Park in Austria and Hungary as well. The Lake has an abundant wildlife, lots of birds, even more during the migration period. The Hungarian part of the Lake is mostly covered by reeds.
Pecs located in South Transdanubia in the Mecsek hills region. It is a beautiful part of Hungary, with very nice villages, forests, Lakes and caves. Pecs was a European Capital of Culture in 2010. Pecs is a little Turkish and little mediterranean city, as the 150 year of Turkish presence in Hungary here left the most traces. Pecs has a zoo and a viewpoint on the hill, lots of interesting Museums and Art galleries, and a Unesco World Heritage site of Ancient christian Tombs.
Szeged is a city in the South part of Hungary in the Great Plain. The river Tisza, Hungary’s second biggest river crosses the city. In 1879 almost the whole city was flooded by the river. Szeged is famous about the paprika, and Pick salami, and here are the most of the sunshiny hours in Hungary. Szeged has a botanical garden, one of the finest zoo in Hungary, and a newly built spa complex as well. Szeged is a University Town, and the Summer Open air Theathre days are also famous. North from Szeged the Lake Feher fishing lake system has plentiful wildlife, in Autumn thousands of cranes can be found there.
In Esztergom one can find the biggest Cathedral in Hungary. The Cathedral was founded in 1001. The enjoyable city is belongs to the famous Danube bend area, like Esztergom and Szentendre. Near the city the beautiful Pilis hills area can be found.
Sarvar is an interesting city in West Hungary next to the River Raba. The city has a nice Thermal bath complex, a Castle, and there are lots of forests nearby. Near the Spa complex there is a nice boating Lake also can be found. There is a botanical garden here as well.
Siofok is perhaps the most popular city next to Lake Balaton. It is located in the South shore, and it is a popular beach here. There names of the beaches like “golden” and “silver” beaches here. The city has a population of 24,000 people. Otherwise the city looks like the other settlements next to Lake Balaton apart from the relatively smaller city center, it is covered with one or two level weekend and normal houses. In Siofok the Sio canal is the only place where is possible to let the the water of Lake Balaton away. Near Siofok there are interesting fishing lakes can be found.
Heviz is located app 10 km from Lake Balatons West corner. It is a very popular tourist target with lots of Hotels, and the Main attraction here is the 4,44 Ha area Hot water lake. The Lake has so hot water that it is quite enjoyable even in winter. In fact in winter it is better, because in summer perhaps it is too warm. Heviz is a tidy settlement. Nearby Alsopahok is also popular.
Buk or Bukfurdo
Buk can be found in the Western border of Hungary. The Main attraction is the huge spa complex here. There are many beautiful places around as well, like Koszeg.
Gyula is a popular Spa city in Hungary. There is also a brick Castle there. Gyula is in the Southeast corner of Hungary area. There are very nice places there next to the River as well. Gyula is a quiet enjoyable city.
Tata is famous about the “Old” Lake. There is a Castle next to the Lake as well. The Lake is famous about the lots of Geese spend the Autumn here. Can be 50,000 geese here is Autumn, and there is an event dedicated for this purpose called “Vadlud sokadalom”. Tata can be found in North Transdanubia.
Visegrad is one of the Pearls of Hungary. It is a very fine place in the Danube bend. The Main attraction is the Upper Castle here. It is above the Danube and has a beautiful view on the river. The main event is the Castle Knight days here. The surrounding forest covered hills are also beautiful. Visegrad can be found approximately 45km from Budapest in North direction.
Miskolctapolca is a smaller settlement with a unique Cave Bath. Miskolctapolca located in North Hungary not far from Lillafured or Aggtelek.
